5 Easy-to-make Christmas gift ideas

Christmas is upon us! And you know what that means… singing Christmas carols and buying presents for the ones you love! It can be challenging to find the perfect gift for them, especially if you are a busy mum or dad who has to take care of the little ones. When you are dealing with a last-minute preparation, instead of comparing gift prices and shopping for the perfect gift, why not make one yourself? Handcrafted gifts are easy to make and do not require much spending! If you have yet to do Christmas shopping, no need to worry. We have for you 5 simple yet amazing Christmas gift ideas that you can make yourself from the comfort of your home.

Handmade necklace

An inexpensive gift that is both personal and beautiful like a homemade pendant is unique and one-of-a-kind. While you may think making a pendant is very complicated or difficult, it is actually very simple! All you need is cotton cords, which you can purchase from your local sewing shop, and a beautiful pendant in the form of wrapped beads or even jewellery parts that are lying around in your house. There is a lot of emotional and sentimental value in a pendant that you personally make and your loved ones would surely treasure it.

Paint your mugs

For this homemade gift, all you need is oil paint, a sharpie, an oven and a whole lot of creativity. If you have a boring white mug that is on your shelf and have not seen the light of day, perhaps now is the perfect time to utilise it! If you know the gift recipient’s favourite colours, pattern design or even hobbies, you can try to create something that best describes them. But if you are not particularly good at painting and designing, you could always use the sharpie and write a heartfelt message on the cup.

To make sure the design, patterns or the message on the mug stay permanent, you will need to allow approximately 72 hours for the paint to set onto the mug. Afterwards, place the dry mug into a cold oven and turn on the oven to 220 degrees celsius. Bake the mug for an hour and turn the oven off. Leave the mug to cool in the oven for a few hours and once cooled, remove the mug from the oven and enjoy the handy work that you have created! Regardless of your design, a personal mug that was specially made for them would surely make your loved ones happy!

A jar of delicious cookies

If you are fond of baking delicious cookies and treats, then gifting a jar of homemade cookies baked from the heart to the ones you love is a no-brainer. Of course, you don’t need to be a certified pastry chef to bake cookies. Simple homemade chocolate cookies that are chewy and soft to bite are more than enough to make anyone’s mouth water. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make chewy chocolate chip cookies. To preserve the shelf life of the cookies, place them in airtight containers or put them in the freezer.

Aromatherapy candles

The fragrant smell of candles and essential oil works wonders in setting up the Christmas mood. Homemade candles mainly use soy wax or beeswax, both are natural and healthy to their chemical counterparts, paraffin wax. For friends and family who have trouble sleeping due to stress and work, homemade aromatherapy candles can help them relax and relieve stress. All you need is the aforementioned soy wax, essential oils of your choice, cotton wicks, whisk and a pot!

First, create a double boiler by adding water into a pot and bringing it to a simmer. Place soy wax in a glass bowl and place on top of the pot until it melts. Give it a whisk every now and then to encourage melting. While you wait, cut wicks to fit glass jars or metal tins and tape them around a pen or any other utensil. Once that is done, put the pencil or utensil on top of the container to leave the wicks hanging inside (this is to ensure the wicks stay upright). Once the wax is melted, take off the bowl and wipe down the outside and stir in your preferred essential oil scent. The amount of essential oil you use depends on the scent of the oil, whether you’re mixing them and the amount of wax you used. Once done, add in a few more drops of essential oil and prepare to pour into your containers. Finally, allow it to cool! We recommend using Cinnamon scented essential oils to add on the Christmas mood!

Terrariums

Terrariums’ minimal space requirements and fuss-free maintenance is the perfect gift for friends and family who have a green thumb. You can even decorate the terrarium with Christmas decorations such as a miniature Christmas tree that blends in with the other plants. The materials you will need for it are cheap and reusable too. You will need a large glass container that has a wide opening, small plants that do not mind humidity and enclosed spaces such as fern and moss, stone layers for water drainage, soil and decorate them with Christmas-themed decorations! The cute little plants are easy to care for and could be easily personalised as well!
